Missing hiker found dead: Gillam RCMP

RCMP found missing 29-year-old Norwegian hiker, Steffen Skjottelvik, dead on Sunday.

At approximately 10:20 a.m., officers from Gillam RCMP and Parks Canada, with community searchers from Fort Severn were performing a ground search.

On the west side of the Hayes River, a helicopter pilot reported that he may have found the hiker’s body, a short distance away from where his jacket was found on Friday.

Ground searchers and officers then headed to the location on foot, and confirmed the body was Skjottelvik, who went missing on Aug. 15 after failing to arrive in York Factory, Man. as planned.

His body was transported to Gillam by helicopter, then transported to Winnipeg for a scheduled autopsy on Monday morning.
