Manitoba researchers working to put end to HIV stigma

Researchers in Manitoba are looking to improve treatment and reduce the stigma for those living with HIV.

A team of researchers at the University of Manitoba is working to put an end to the stigma around HIV.

The group is being led by associate professor Dr. Zulma Rueda, who highlighted the fact that Manitoba recorded its highest-ever HIV incidence in 2022 and 2023.

She noted the research also found that for the first time, more women than men were diagnosed with HIV, adding that the numbers also show an overrepresentation of Indigenous people and drug users.

“This shift is alarming and highlights the need for urgent and community-driven responses,” said Rueda, who is the Canada research chair in sexually transmitted infection – resistance and control.

Rueda’s words come on ‘Zero HIV Stigma Day’- a day of action aimed at dismantling the prejudice and stigma that surround HIV.

She explained that those diagnosed with HIV can feel self-stigma, as well as rejection from the community.

“Sometimes there are concerning taboos that are not true,” she said.

“For example, that HIV can be transmitted through sharing food or through sharing plates. So those are not possible routes of transmission.”

To put an end to the stigma, Rueda wants people to know that HIV is preventable with tools like pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis.

She added that an HIV diagnosis is not a death sentence as treatments can allow people to live long, healthy lives.

Rueda also stressed the importance of testing.

“Testing saves lives,” she said.

“It’s quick, confidential and is a powerful step toward ending stigma.”
