VANCOUVER, B.C. — When she looks at pictures of her old home, a woman named littlewoo will never forget the day she heard something weird in the walls. “There was scurrying,” littlewoo recalls. “And we’re like, ‘Oh! No! We have a rat problem.” So, she and her partner Shane turned a cardboard box into a humane trap, placed it in front of the fireplace, and waited. “Then all of a sudden we heard [a sound in the box],” littlewoo says. “We got it! And slammed the door [on the trap]!” They carried the box to a nearby park and prepared to set the rat free. “At first it was concern for what me might find,” littlewoo recalls her apprehension about opening the trap. “[But then] absolute joy!” Rather than a rat, they discovered the box contained a baby squirrel. But instead of running away, the little animal stayed absolutely still and didn’t leave. “So, we started to brainstorm,” littlewoo says. “What do we do with this baby squirrel?” The couple agreed the squirrel needed its mom. But when they brought the baby back home, she was nowhere in sight. “We were trying to come up with [baby squirrel’ sounds, wee, wee, wee,!” littlewoo laughs. “But we didn’t really know!” So, they searched on-line, found a recording of an actual squirrel’s cry, placed the baby on the ground, and played it. “And we were shocked!,” littlewoo says before showing a video of what happened. Less than a minute later, the mom appeared on the top of a fence, before racing to the ground to investigate. “It was testing to see if there’s something a little bit off,” littlewoo says the mother squirrel was wary before moving in close. She scooped the baby in her arms, the baby curled in close, and they ran off reunited. “I started to have tears, and I was very choked up,” littlewoo says. “I felt a sense of awe that it actually worked.” But this was just the beginning. “It felt like dejavu,” littlewoo smiles. Over the next few days, they heard more scurrying in the walls and discovered more squirrels in their fireplace. “It felt like [the fireplace] was a portal from another dimension full of squirrels,” littlewoo laughs. “It was like one after another they kept coming through. But this time, littlewoo and Shane cared for them, before making multiple trips to an animal rescue. And once the babies were old enough, the whole family was released into the wild, leaving these humans feeling a deep affinity with squirrels. “We will always remember the time the squirrels came through the portal,” littlewoo smiles. “And decided to give us the gift of being able to connect with them in that way.”
