Police shoot man in Sagkeeng First Nation

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after RCMP fatally shot a man allegedly armed with a knife on Sagkeeng First Nation Tuesday morning.

One man is dead after he was shot by an RCMP officer in Sagkeeng First Nation.

Manitoba RCMP issued a statement about the shooting Tuesday afternoon – hours after it occurred.

Police said around 6:38 a.m., officers arrived at a home in Sagkeeng First Nation, responding to two 911 calls about a man armed with a knife.

At the home, police said officers found a man holding a knife and said an “encounter” occurred leading to one of the officers shooting the man.

Police said officers provided immediate medical care for the man’s serious injury until emergency crews arrived. The man, 29-years-old, was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

The RCMP noted the officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras, which were turned on when officers arrived at the scene. Police said the video will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) which is now probing the shooting.

Police noted Powerview RCMP and Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.
