Man charged with hate-symbol graffiti arrested following break-in: Winnipeg police

The man arrested in connection with a hateful graffiti spree in Winnipeg has been re-arrested following a Crescentwood break-in.

A Winnipeg man arrested in connection with a string of hate-related graffiti incidents around the city has been arrested again following a break-in at a city home.

Oliver Didtger Ederhof, 34, was charged with break and enter with intent, public mischief and failure to comply with conditions of his release, according to a news release from Winnipeg police. He was detained in custody.

Officers responded to the report of a break-in at a home in Crescentwood on Jan. 9 at 11:30 p.m.

The residents of the home were awakened by their security alarm and found a man, who police identified as Ederhof in a news release, standing in their house. They said one of the residents yelled at the man and he left the home, and no thefts or damage was reported.

Police said Ederhof was located nearby and he allegedly provided police with a false name during the investigation.

Ederhof was arrested on Jan. 8 in connection with multiple instances of vandalism around Winnipeg. He was charged with 14 counts of mischief and released from custody with conditions.

Police allege hate-related and random graffiti was spray painted on homes, garages and vehicles in the Crescentwood neighbourhood on Jan. 2, as well as on the entrance of Munson Park on Wellington Crescent. Swastikas were also found painted on the outside of Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, Kelvin High School, and Abu Bakr Al-Siddique Community Centre and Masjid in the first week of January.

Constable Claude Chancy with the Winnipeg Police Service said there is no connection between the investigations and the most recent arrest stands as an isolated incident.

None of the charges against Ederhof in any of the incidents have been proven in court.
