Man breaks into Winnipeg family’s home, stabs himself with butcher knife: police

Winnipeg police arrested a man who allegedly terrorized a family during a Friday morning home invasion.

A Winnipeg family is shaken up after a disturbing break-in at their Inkster-area home.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the family was asleep just after midnight on Friday at their home in the 700 block of College Avenue when they heard someone break in.

The homeowner called police before going into the kitchen to confront the intruder. There he found a man and asked him to leave.

Officers say the man then took a butcher knife from the kitchen and started stabbing himself. As police arrived, the man cornered the homeowner, knife still in hand.

Police were able to arrest the intruder within minutes.

WPS say the man was taken to hospital by ambulance in stable condition due to his self-inflicted stab wounds.

Police believe substance use was a factor.

No other injuries were reported.

A 26-year-old man, who was previously known to police, faces several charges, including assault with a weapon.

He remains in custody.

None of the allegations have been tested in court.
