Man arrested after attempted assault of taxi driver

The Winnipeg Police Service has made an arrest after an attempted assault in the city’s North End led to the discovery of a loaded gun.

According to police, the incident began with the attempted assault of a taxi driver in the area of Burrows Street and Powers Avenue around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday.

The taxi driver saw a marked police car and activated their emergency strobe light, which got the officers’ attention and caused the suspect to disengage.

Police said the officers came over to talk to the driver who told them about the attempted attack. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

Police detained the suspect in the 200 block of Powers Street. He was found to be in possession of a loaded Springfield Hellcat 9x19 handgun with a prohibited 13 round magazine.

A 48-year-old man has been charged with several offenses including possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition. He is in custody and the charges have not been proven in court.
