Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada (BGC) is hosting a free sports fair and equipment giveaway Saturday at 60 Farrell Street in Dartmouth, N.S. The event includes sports demonstrations, snacks and free sports equipment for families. The giveaway is intended to remove the cost of equipment as a barrier for youth in the neighbourhood who want to play sports, said the news release. Community recreation partners will host demonstrations to give children and youth hands-on experience with a variety of sports. “We want every kid in Dartmouth North to know that sport is for them,” said Mike Vautour, director of development and communications for BGC Greater Halifax Clubs. “A basketball or a soccer ball can be the start of something great, like a new friend, a new team, or a new reason to look forward to the weekend.” Cost is one of the top reasons consistently listed that stops children from participating in sports, said BGC Greater Clubs Halifax. “The Sports Fair is built to meet families where they are, in their own neighbourhood, on a Saturday morning, with no fees and no equipment of their own required to walk through the door,” said the release. The sports fair is presented by BGC Greater Halifax clubs in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries, The North Grove, REC Halifax, Ecology Action Centre, SchoolsPlus Nova Scotia, Dartmouth Community Health Board and Sport Nova Scotia. The event started at 10 a.m. and is open to kids and families in Dartmouth North. The equipment giveaway will continue while supplies last.
