Jewish advocacy group condemns posters put up in downtown Winnipeg

B’Nai Brith Canada has condemned posters put up in downtown Winnipeg Friday that some are calling anti-Semitic.

The major crimes unit is currently investigating the incident.

Police said around 9:30 p.m. officers responded to reports of “questionable” posters in the downtown area.

Officers found some of the posters, which police said make allegations that Mayor Sam Katz and members of Winnipeg’s business community are involved in “questionable business transactions.”

Salisbury House president and CEO Earl Barish was named on the poster and released a statement saying it was unfortunate there were people who would print and post the posters.

B’Nai Brith released a statement Sunday, said implicating a large group with the brush of racism is most disturbing.

MP Vic Toews released a statement Saturday saying the posters were anti-Semitic and he was “shocked and disgusted.”

Police said the messages were not signed and there was no reference to any individual or group. Officers remained tight-lipped about the actual content of the posters.

Toews said it was disheartening to see the posters put up on the eve of the Rosh Hashanah and the Jewish New Year.
