Here’s how much rain is expected to fall on southern Manitoba

It’s going to be a rainy start to the week for much of southern Manitoba.

On Monday morning, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a special weather statement for several Manitoba communities, including Gimli, Headingley, and Portage la Prairie.

According to the weather agency, a band of slow-moving rain is stretching northeast across the western Red River Valley and southern Interlake. The area of rainfall will move slightly east throughout Monday, but then “stall out and pivot over the region” on Monday night.

Rainfall totals will vary throughout southern Manitoba; however, moderate to heavy rain is expected. The western Red River Valley and southern Interlake are expected to receive 30 to 50 millimetres (mm) of rain by Tuesday morning, with the possibility of localized accumulations up to 60 mm.

For the more eastern areas, including Winnipeg, rainfall totals of 30 to 40 mm are expected, while 10 to 25 mm is forecasted for the central Red River Valley.

The rain is expected to end early Tuesday.
