Heavy rain causes extensive overland flooding of farmland in Manitoba

WINNIPEG -- Officials say heavy rains during the Victoria Day long weekend have caused extensive overland flooding of farmland in some parts of southern Manitoba.

Regions that received move than 75 millimetres of rain include areas west of the Red River in the rural municipalities of Rhineland, Stanley and Pembina.

Officials say overland flooding has also occurred further north in the municipalities of Roland, Thompson and Dufferin.

Conditions are expected to improve within a few days as water drains from fields.

Most streams in the wet areas have already crested.

Overland flooding from the Pembina River in the United States has temporarily closed North Dakota Highway 18 and the Gretna border crossing.

A town just south of the border remains under evacuation orders. Residents from Cavalier, North Dakota, totaling 1,500, were forced to leave their homes due to a flood threat.
