Residents of a remote northern Manitoba community are able to return home after briefly being ordered to evacuate due to a wildfire. According to a message from the Manitoba Emergency Management Organization in the MB Ready App, those living in the South Indian Lake area, which includes the O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, were ordered to evacuate their community earlier this month. At 4 p.m. Monday, the evacuation order was lifted, saying the situation had improved and residents can begin returning home. Residents are being advised to check the MB Ready app for any updates. Manitoba’s fire map shows a fire in the area burning since June 2026. As of Monday, it has been measured at 17,275.1 hectares in size. South Indian Lake is located roughly 130 km north of the city of Thompson.
