Curling club suing city over housing development decision

Granite Curling Club has filed a lawsuit against the City of Winnipeg over the city’s controversial affordable housing plan for its parking lot.

The City of Winnipeg is being taken to court over its contentious decision to move ahead with an affordable housing development next to the Granite Curling Club.

Granite Curling Club filed a notice of application in the Court of King’s Bench of Manitoba on Monday, saying the club will suffer irreparable harm if the plan goes through.

City council approved a land rezoning bylaw during a meeting on Dec. 18, which would allow an 11-storey affordable housing unit to be built on the club’s primary parking lot.

However, the club is looking to quash the rezoning bylaw, arguing the city has no jurisdiction to proceed with the plan.

The club has fought the development plan, appealing to the province’s municipal board which ruled the two parties will have to agree on a new parking plan before the housing project can begin.

The City of Winnipeg has previously said the ruling was not legally binding. It declined to comment as the matter is before the courts.
