Convicted sex offender released from prison, to live in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police are warning that a convicted sex offender has been released from prison and is expected to live in Winnipeg.

Burton Randy Thomas, 52, was released from Stony Mountain Institution on Tuesday. He has convictions of two counts of sexual assault, along with convictions on multiple other charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and numerous breaches of probation.

Police said Thomas has participated in treatment programming while incarcerated but is still considered high-risk to reoffend in a sexual manner against women.

Thomas is bound by conditions of a long-term supervision order, which includes not consuming alcohol or drugs, not entering drinking establishments, living at a specific place and reporting relationships. He is also not allowed to have contact with his victim or any members of their family.

Winnipeg police said it provided information about Thomas for the public to take measures to protect themselves, but add any vigilante activity against him will not be tolerated.
