Manitoba weather forecast: Winter not letting go

Although spring is just around the corner, winter isn’t ready to let go just yet.

A fast-approaching Alberta clipper is spreading snow in southern Manitoba on Thursday.

Snow will spread eastward and is expected to reach Winnipeg and the Red River Valley as early as late afternoon.

Strong and gusting winds are also expected to cause blowing snow. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a blowing snow advisory for the Red River Valley, south-central regions and areas in the southeast corner of the province.

Conditions will deteriorate on Thursday evening in north and northwesterly wind gusts that could reach 70 to 80 km/h, according to the weather agency. Blowing snow should begin to ease overnight into Friday morning.

ECCC adds that travel will likely be hazardous in near-zero visibility.

The advisory does not include Winnipeg, but blowing snow could develop in strong winds inside the city, especially in open areas.

Higher snowfall amounts are expected in the southwest than the southeast, although ECCC said the exact track the system will take is uncertain.
