Another day, another Alberta clipper is blasting southern Manitoba Friday with snow and strong, gusting winds.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a yellow blowing snow advisory for most of southern Manitoba, except for areas closer to the Ontario border.

Falling snow, combining with southerly wind gusts up to 70 km/h could make travel hazardous in near-zero visibility Friday afternoon and tonight. ECCC says 5-12 cm of snow is possible.

By early Friday afternoon, many highways were closed in the southwest, mainly in the Parkland region. The area is under a snowfall warning. ECCC says 10-15 cm of snow, or more in higher terrain, is possible by Friday evening.

Anticipate further potential highways closures across the south as conditions worsen Friday afternoon, including in the Winnipeg region and Red River Valley. Inside the city, the afternoon commute will likely be tough slogging in deteriorating conditions.

As the clipper passes over Manitoba Friday night, strong, gusting winds will shift from the southeast to the northwest, causing another blast of blowing snow.

Snow will spread into northwestern Ontario Friday afternoon and continue tonight. Snowfall amounts and winds gusts will be less than in Manitoba.

Meanwhile, northwestern Manitoba will also catch 2-4 cm snow on the northern edge of the precipitation field Friday afternoon into tonight.

Arctic high pressure will move in behind the clipper, which means sunshine and colder daytime highs around -19 C to -17 C throughout the weekend in Winnipeg.
