It is a blustery end to the week on Friday across Manitoba after a low pressure system swept across the province Thursday.

In its wake, light snow and flurries continue to blanket the province in strong and gusty northwest winds Friday afternoon. Conditions are similar in northwestern Ontario.

Blowing snow across southern Manitoba is particularly problematic for areas south of Lake Manitoba and southeast of Lake Winnipeg and has caused some highway closures. Near-zero visibility is anticipated, at times, until conditions are expected to begin to improve Friday evening.

Blowing snow is being fueled by strong winds funneling off the Manitoba lakes, where blizzard conditions have developed.

Blizzard conditions are also expected in Churchill Friday afternoon, with improvement expected this evening.

Temperatures are also falling Friday afternoon across Manitoba as a bitterly cold arctic airmass is settling over the province. Expect very cold temperatures over the weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a cold warning for Brochet and Tadoule Lake, where dangerously cold wind chill values are expected. The warning could be expanded to other northern regions as the frigid airmass spreads.

Blowing snow is expected to continue Friday evening in the south. By Saturday, some sunshine will return, but so will much colder temperatures that will persist into early next week.
