Work resumes to clear what’s left of the Manwin Hotel

Work to clear what remains of an infamous Main Street hotel is set to resume this week after a fire totalled the century-old structure.

A Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service spokesperson told CTV News the site remediation contractor has all necessary approvals and permits to continue clearing the lot after asbestos temporarily paused operations.

“We can confirm that debris removal and site remediation work continues. It is expected the majority of the work will be completed in the next week,” the spokesperson said.

A fire ripped through the vacant hotel last month, with firefighters spending hours trying to extinguish the flames.

In the end, the building was declared a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Before the fire, the Manwin Hotel was temporarily closed multiple times in recent years for health and safety hazards. It was also the site of several homicides before tenants were ordered out last year.

The building subsequently went up for sale in April 2025 for just under $2.8 million.
