Brandon arena reopening after closing over 2 years ago

A local arena in Brandon, Man., is set to reopen this week after closing close to two and a half years ago.

On Friday, the City of Brandon announced the Community Sportsplex Ice Arena is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday.

The arena has been closed since March 2023 amid safety concerns with an aging ammonia ice plant. Since then, city staff have worked to assess the facility, engage with the public and invest in repairs.

In a news release, Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett said he’s excited for the arena to reopen.

“The community asked for ice to return, and we delivered,” he said.

“This isn’t just about a facility; it’s about supporting the sports and activities that matter to Brandon. The Sportsplex is a key part of staying active and connected, and we’re glad to have it back.”

Public programming at the arena will begin Oct. 1, with arena rentals starting on Oct. 6.
