Motorcyclist in life-threatening condition after northwest Calgary crash

Calgary police are offering tips for motorcyclists to stay safe on the city’s roads after a crash Tuesday night left a rider with life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened just a few days into Motorcycle Safety Month on the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar.

According to police, around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a man in his 20s was headed east on Shriners Road N.W. on a Yamaha motorcycle, and in the 9600 block “exited the roadway.”

Police say he was thrown from the bike.

Police say he was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

Investigation into what exactly occurred is ongoing, and police say speed is being looked at as a possible contributing factor.

Impairment is not.

• Ensure your bike is checked over and tuned up before heading out;
• Stick to areas that aren’t so busy;
• Keep road conditions in mind;
• Remember the rules of the road—particularly speed limits;
• Wear a helmet; and
• Avoid the blind spots of other vehicles and try to stay visible at all times.
