The councillor who represents downtown Windsor is throwing his name in the hat for a second term. Ward 3 Coun. Renaldo Agostino announced on AM800’s The Kyle Horner Show on Friday morning that he will be seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election. Agostino received 29 per cent of the votes during the 2022 election, winning by just 75 ballots. Since being elected, Agostino has advocated for the homeless community and has fought hard to improve life in the downtown core by creating more events and pushing for vacant buildings to be filled by new businesses. Rumours were swirling online that Agostino would run for the mayor’s seat. Renaldo says he’s not done with being councillor just yet. “I’m going to seek my re-election if the people will take me back for Ward 3 and represent the residents of downtown Windsor and the ward and run it back for another four years.” He says while he thought about running for mayor, there’s unfinished business in Ward 3. “I was walking by 737 Ouellette, it’s a beautiful condo right in the heart of downtown Windsor, and there’s about 15 residents sitting out there and I’ve got my AirPods on, and I see they want to talk so I took out my AirPods and start chatting with them, and they’re like ‘councillor, please don’t leave us, we need you to represent us, we need you to stay and represent us, we need you to keep fighting for us’. So, I’ve got a lot of work I want to finish.” Renaldo says he likes the challenge of his ward. “I am blessed to run and work and live in the best ward of the city, right? I’ve got the most action, I’m not trying to fix signs, I’m not trying to fill potholes, I like a good challenge, and you’re not going to find a better one than ward 3 of downtown Windsor. And I feel that we’ve done a lot of good, but I feel we have a long way to go and I want to keep fighting.” As of Aug. 7, only one other person has filed for Ward 3 - Rabia Kirma. Interested candidates will have until Aug. 21 to file nomination papers. The municipal election will be held on Monday, Oct. 26.
