The Windsor Police Service is introducing a new team dedicated to protecting children from abuse and supporting survivors of sexual violence. The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) officially launched on Jan. 5, 2026. Operating within the Special Victims Unit, the CASA Unit brings together six specially trained officers to deliver focused, trauma-informed investigations to ensure these sensitive cases receive the care, attention and expertise they need. “This team ensures victims of child abuse and sexual assault receive the focused, trauma-informed care they deserve,” said Staff Sgt Richard Sieberer of the Special Victims Unit. “These cases require time, experience, and trust, and our CASA investigators are equipped to provide exactly that. Our goal is to ensure every survivor feels supported, respected, and heard throughout the entire process.” By bringing child abuse and sexual assault investigations cases together under one specialized team, the goal of the CASA Unit is to provide a consistent, survivor-centred experience for survivors and families from the first report through to the eventual court proceedings. CASA officers receive enhanced training in forensic interviewing, major case management, and other specialized areas. The unit also works closely with Crown prosecutors, victim services, and community partners to support victims throughout the judicial process. In 2025, the Windsor Police Service investigated 245 child abuse related incidents and 713 sexual assault related incidents. Police said these statistics highlight the demand for specialized, trauma informed investigative support for victims and their families. The CASA Unit can be contacted at 519-255-6700, ext. 4903.
