Where should Windsor put its new recycling and garbage bins?

The City of Windsor is working to keep parks clean by expanding waste and recycling systems. More than 750 garbage and recycling bins will be installed across Windsor and your input is wanted to help choose locations.

Bins will be put in ‘high use park spaces’ with the following goals:

Serve both garbage and recycling needs in one convenient location

Reduce overflow by holding significantly more waste than traditional above-ground metal cans

Minimize odours, wildlife interference, and windblown litter

Improve collection efficiency for city crews

A survey is open until Feb. 28. Before submitting your feedback, look where current bins are. Then, consider the city’s criteria for placement:

Installation in grass or soil (not concrete or asphalt)

Proximity to accessible pathways

Adequate truck access for servicing and emptying

Placement in high-use areas, like picnic sites, playgrounds, splash pads, sports courts, trails, sports fields, and riverfront areas

Encouraging proper waste sorting and recycling while keeping parks inviting

“The City of Windsor is proud of our public outdoor spaces. Across the community, residents can enjoy more than 206 parks; over 174 kilometres of multi-use trails, including six kilometres along the waterfront, the Malden Park mountain bike trails, Ganatchio Trail, Little River Corridor Trail, and the 42.5-kilometre Windsor Loop; and over 2,520 acres of greenspace,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

“That’s a lot of area for our city teams to maintain and keep looking their best. I’m pleased to be able to support the installation of new garbage and recycling silos that will go a long way towards reducing overflow, minimizing the impacts of waste, and keeping our parks looking great all year long. I encourage folks to take the survey and help us select spots where this new infrastructure will make the biggest difference.”
