Officer-involved shooting in Remington Park area, SIU investigating

The SIU is on scene, investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place on Thursday

Windsor police have confirmed an officer-involved shooting in the Remington Park area and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to investigate.

According to the SIU, a 58-year-old man was seriously injured.

Around 2:45 p.m., the SIU said police were called to the the area of Stanley Street and Lillian Avenue where they found a man in the backyard of a home who reportedly wanted to hurt himself.

The man discharged his firearm in the direction of officers and then went inside the home, at which time, officers tried to negotiate with him.

While the man was still armed, the SIU said he came out of the home and three officers discharged their firearms and the man was struck — he was taken to hospital for treatment.

Sean Clinansmith, who lives near the scene, said he first heard shots fired around 3 p.m.

“I got home from my doctor’s appointment, and the police presence was already here by the time I got out of my vehicle, which is only two blocks away from the intersection,” he said.

“The cops were telling me to get in my house and go in the basement, and that’s when I heard four to six shots continuously.”

Several neighbours told CTV News that multiple shots were heard.

“About four minutes after the initial shots, we heard a single shot,” said Clinansmith.

The SIU is brought into police investigations to provide independent oversight when police actions may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
