‘Meat’ the record: Windsor restaurant takes a shot at world’s longest kebab

Smokies BBQ in Windsor has created what they believe is the world’s biggest kebab.

Fueled by a mouth-watering taste for the record books, a Windsor barbecue joint rolled a 78-foot-long beef kebab Wednesday in an attempt to set a world record.

Folding tables stretched down Ottawa Street and Smokies BBQ staff had toppings at the ready as part of a spectacle that drew dozens of curious onlookers.

“Had a bunch of people come out. They all had some food, so it’s nice to see the smiles, you know, associated with it,” said Tigran Kadevchyan, the owner of Smokies.

Ahead of the attempt, Smokies aimed to reach about 160-feet, but the kebabs shrunk during the cooking process.

“We’re going to do this bigger and stronger next year, and hopefully, maybe 200-feet,” he said.

Altogether, the crew spent hours cooking about 170 kebabs and preparing all the fixings.

The idea came to Kadevchyan after seeing another local business try and create the world’s largest shawarma. Although there was no previous record for the world’s longest kebab, according to Kadevchyan, Smokies believes they now own that title.

At the end of the day, he said they were just happy to use the major feat to feed some hungry residents.

“Just to get the word out and to get the awareness for people that don’t have the proper means to getting food everyday, they can come and get some free sandwiches,” he added.
