CKPS addresses safety concerns in downtown core

The Chatham-Kent Police Service is addressing safety concerns circulating on social media regarding Chatham’s downtown core.

A business owner posted on social media regarding safety concerns. Police said they spoke to the owner and went to the business, adding no criminal offenses were committed.

The CKPS said the incident is “indicative of the rise in social disorder calls occurring across Chatham-Kent.”

A news release said there has been a rise in social disorder, mental health crisis, trespassing, and addiction-related behaviour calls across the province.

“We recognize that public safety is at the core of our community, and we want everyone to feel safe and welcome,” said Chief Kirk Earley.

“While recent incidents downtown have drawn attention online, the majority of these – over 80 per cent – are related to social disorder, and not criminal acts. This aligns with broader community challenges such as bail reform, housing instability, and limited support services.”

Earley added that public safety is a shared responsibility and the CKPS is working with local partners to give support where needed, and public safety is the number one priority.

So far this year, 84 per cent of calls to police have been social disorder calls, compared to 16 per cent of criminal calls.

Last year, 80 per cent were social disorder related and 20 per cent were crime related.

Property checks are up this year compared to last by 22 per cent and person stops are up 46 per cent.

Here’s what CKPS says it is doing to address concerns:

Increased patrols, maintaining a visible presence in the downtown core, on foot and in car

Working closely with local agencies to connect those in crisis with housing, addiction, and mental health support

Working with the community to give up to date and accurate information and listen to concerns
