The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified following an officer-involved shooting of an alleged robbery suspect early Wednesday evening.

According to a news release from the Windsor Police Service, shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a robbery in the 3200-block of Sandwich Street.

The suspect was tracked to the area of Rankin Avenue and Wyandotte Street West, where officers located a man who was armed with a knife.

During the encounter, police say the suspect was shot by police.

The suspect has been transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Rankin Avenue remains closed to public access between Wyandotte Street West and University Avenue.

“As the SIU is expected to invoke its mandate and assume carriage of the investigation, the Windsor Police Service is unable to provide further information,” police said in a statement.
