A month-long FIFA World Cup fan festival is coming to downtown Langford, bringing giant outdoor screens, live entertainment and hopes of an economic boost for local businesses that say sales have been sluggish in recent months. Starting June 11, Station Avenue will be transformed into a pedestrian-focused gathering space for the duration of the tournament, with the festival running until July 19. The free event is being supported in part through the province’s Community Event Support Fund, which is helping communities across B.C. host public celebrations tied to the global tournament. Between matches, the downtown core is expected to remain active, with performances from local bands, dancers and cultural groups scheduled throughout the festival. Organizers say the goal is to keep a steady flow of activity in the area throughout the day, not just during games, with food trucks and family friendly programming also part of the plan. “It’s been quiet around here,” said Rick Lacey, co-owner of the Hot Dog Guys food truck. “Anything that draws a crowd right now is great for any of our businesses.” Lacey says operators in the Langford Station area are hoping the month-long influx of visitors will translate into stronger sales and increased foot traffic. Station Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the festival, creating a walkable public space in the heart of downtown Langford. Similar World Cup viewing areas are also being prepared in Victoria, including a planned fan zone in Bastion Square for Canada’s opening match. For now, anticipation is building as Langford prepares for what business owners hope will be a busy and vibrant summer downtown.
