81-year-old charged with murder after shooting in Port Alberni, B.C.

An 81-year-old man has been charged with murder after a shooting at a trailer park on Vancouver Island Friday, according to police.

The Port Alberni RCMP says it responded to a 911 call reporting a man had been shot just after 9 p.m. March 13.

“Upon arrival, officers located three adult males, including the victim, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” Mounties wrote in a statement Sunday. “First responders attempted life‑saving measures; however, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit has taken over the case.

Herbert Crowley, an 81-year-old Port Alberni resident, is now facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. He remains in custody.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the victim’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Sgt. Jason Kerr, in the statement. “Investigators have worked tirelessly to advance this investigation and bring charges forward. As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.”
