‘Focus on the little things’: 4-year-old finds positive potential in rain puddles

Most of us avoid them, but for a four-year-old, puddles are about rippling laughter. And once in a while they even offer up a treasure.

ESQUIMALT, B.C. — While some may say you have to travel to the end of a rainbow to find a pot of gold, Evren Forester was simply standing at the edge of the sidewalk when he discovered a treasure in a puddle.

“The golden rock,” the four-year-old says before crouching down to pick it up. “I’m going to bring it home and keep it as a treasure.”

“Look at that!” Evren’s mom Sacha Sauvé smiles. “Great job!”

When your mom is this encouraging, and you possess the power to find treasure in puddles, the positive possibilities of this rainy day seem limitless.

“I just really want him to know it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing,” Sacha says. “There’s a way to enjoy it.”

Evren says he could keep hunting for treasure like gems, or he could experience what he calls a “crazy puddle.”

If you ask Evren to describe one, the boy will tell you: “If you touch them, they bounce up.”

If your rain boots touch them just right, it feels like the water will bounce back up to the clouds, and laughter will bounce out of your belly.

“One. Two. Three!” Evren and Sacha countdown before holding hands and jumping into the puddle together.

The water splashes high. Their smiles spread wide. And their laughter lasts long.

“(He reminds me) to focus on the little things that are so easy to pass when we’re busy in our lives,” Sacha says.

It turns out you don’t need to wait for a rainbow to start searching for treasure. Evren and his mom are proving that even on the dullest of days you can make golden moments together.
