Young mother and baby killed by falling tree in Comox Valley, B.C.

Authorities are investigating a tragic incident on Vancouver Island, where a woman and her infant were killed by a falling tree at a campground.

A young mother and her five-month-old child have died after being struck by a falling tree near Vancouver Island’s Comox Lake.

Firefighters, paramedics and the Comox Valley RCMP were called to the area, a 25-minute drive from the city of Courtenay, around 1:45 p.m. July 31, Mounties said in a statement Friday.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the 26-year-old woman died at the scene. The child was transported to hospital, but did not survive.

There is no criminality suspected.

Out of respect for the family, and given the sensitive nature of the loss, police say they will be releasing no further details regarding the incident.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected and thank the bystanders who stepped in to help under heartbreaking circumstances,” the statement said.
