Wind warning issued for Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria

Strong and potentially damaging winds are in the forecast again for parts of Metro Vancouver and Greater Victoria Saturday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The weather agency issued a wind warning Saturday morning covering Surrey, Langley, Richmond and Delta on the B.C. mainland, as well as Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The notice warns of strong southeasterly and southwesterly winds of 70 km/h and gusts of up to 90 km/h in exposed coastal areas.

Forecasters say the winds will ease early Sunday morning.

“High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches,” the alert reads. “Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.”

There were a handful of power outages reported on B.C.’s South Coast around noon Saturday. This comes after power was knocked out for thousands of people in the region during a rain-and-windstorm Friday.

A number of BC Ferries sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay had to be cancelled due to the wind Friday morning, but the service was running normally Saturday.
