Trucking company releases dashcam video of near-miss on B.C. highway

Video from a truck's dashcam shows its driver swerving to avoid another vehicle, before crashing through a median on a B.C. highway.

A B.C. trucking company has released dashcam video it said shows “a moment of sheer terror” for one of its drivers, who crashed through a highway median to avoid colliding with another vehicle.

First responders were called to the scene on Highway 19 in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island earlier this month, according to a statement from the Oceanside RCMP on the day of the crash.

“A southbound dump truck towing a trailer had collided with the concrete centre median, rolled onto its side, and came to rest completely blocking the northbound lanes,” Mounties said.

“The preliminary investigation has determined that the dump truck operator took evasive action to avoid colliding with a pick-up truck.”

No one was seriously injured.

The dump truck belonged to Milestone Equipment Contracting Inc., which released the dashcam video to CTV News Wednesday along with a statement shedding light on what the driver experienced.

“Our driver is recovering from both physical and psychological injuries and is currently unable to return to work. A young woman, new to driving, experienced a moment of sheer terror—convinced she was about to lose her life,” wrote Josh Fayerman, the company’s president.

“And yet, despite all of this, no lives were lost.”

Fayerman said he shared the video as a way of encouraging a broader discussion about what can be done to improve safety along the stretch of road, and not to “assign blame.”
