Suspect arrested, charged 7 years after Vancouver nightclub homicide

A suspect has been charged with second-degree murder more than seven years after a fatal stabbing outside a Vancouver nightclub, police announced Tuesday.

The charge was approved against 28-year-old New Westminster resident Sukhjit Sidhu on May 28, and he was arrested the same day, the Vancouver Police Department said in a statement.

Sidhu is accused of stabbing and killing then-23-year-old nightclub promoter Kalwinder Thind outside the Cabana Lounge on Granville Street on Jan. 27, 2018, according to the VPD.

Police said they believe Thind attempted to intervene in an altercation that broke out between two groups of people inside the club and spilled out into the street. He was killed around 2:30 a.m.

“Several people fled following the stabbing, including the suspect, who was not on scene when VPD officers arrived,” the news release reads.

“VPD appealed for witnesses, reviewed video, and ultimately secured sufficient evidence to identify and subsequently arrest the suspect.”

Sidhu remains in custody, police said. Online court records indicate his next appearance is scheduled for June 25 in Vancouver provincial court.
