Shooter sentenced in killing of 34-year-old in Maple Ridge, B.C.

Nearly two years after a fatal shooting in Maple Ridge, B.C., the killer has been handed his sentence.

The 34-year-old victim, whose name has not been made public, was gunned down near 223 Street and Lougheed Highway on the afternoon of May 31, 2024.

Alexander Delair was initially charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting, but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter with a firearm.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Delair was sentenced last week to a combined 15 years in prison for the killing and an unrelated robbery.

In a statement, Sgt. Freda Fong said the victim’s life was “taken away due to a senseless act of violence.”

“While the sentencing does not change that fact, we hope it represents a step forward in the healing process for his loved ones,” Fong said.

Delair was arrested in 2024, and had spent approximately 20 months in custody before his sentencing.

With credit for time served, he’s facing more than 12 additional years behind bars, according to IHIT.

Delair was also given a “lifetime firearms prohibition, a DNA order and a forfeiture order,” IHIT said in a news release.
