Section of Stanley Park seawall remains closed over ‘slope stability’ concerns

A section of the Stanley Park seawall that was closed due to icy conditions earlier this month remains off limits over “slope stability” concerns, according to the Vancouver Park Board.

The popular walking and biking path was blocked off between Prospect Point and Third Beach following the winter storms that walloped the city in early February, and created a risk of ice sliding off overhangs in the park. While the ice has melted, officials are now worried about repeated freezing and thawing has impacted soil in the area.

The park board told CTV News the decision to close part of the seawall was made following a staff inspection, and “in alignment with consultant recommendations.”

It’s unclear how long the closure could last.

“This section of the seawall is a steeply sloped natural area that is exposed to the elements and particularly affected by extreme weather conditions,” the board said in an email statement. “The seawall will remain closed until conditions stabilize and it is deemed safe for public access.”
