The roadway along Spanish Banks Beach in Vancouver will be closed for more than two months, starting on Monday. Northwest Marine Drive in its entirety will be closed from July 27 to September 30, with work scheduled for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. An announcement from the Ministry of Transportation explained that crews will be working to replace a culvert in Spanish Banks Creek “It will help facilitate fish passage and address damage and sediment buildup from the November 2021 atmospheric river,” the ministry said, in a statement. While the road is closed, the ministry said traffic will be detoured along West 4th Avenue/Chancellor Boulevard. “People travelling through the area are encouraged to plan for additional travel time through the detours, especially during peak travel periods,” the ministry added. Spanish Banks Beach is a popular recreational area in the summer, located between the University of British Columbia and Vancouver’s Point Grey neighbourhood. Permanent paid parking was introduced to the beach in July 2024, and the cost rose significantly this spring. The ministry did not mention any alternative parking options that would be in place at Spanish Banks while Northwest Marine Drive is closed.
