Richmond RCMP seek witness seen on video after crash that left woman in critical condition

Richmond RCMP have released video of a pedestrian being struck by a car, in the hopes that a key witness comes forward.

A woman is in critical condition more than three weeks after a driver hit her while she was crossing No. 1 Road in Richmond, according to local Mounties.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Jan. 5, Richmond RCMP said in a news release Thursday, 24 days after the incident.

Front-line officers responded to a 911 call at the intersection of No. 1 and Youngmore roads and found a pedestrian lying on the ground, police said.

“The pedestrian was rushed to a local area hospital with serious injuries and is currently in critical condition,” the release reads.

The Richmond RCMP Serious Crime Unit took over the investigation and conducted a thorough video canvass, police said. They shared a surveillance video with their release.

In it, the victim is seen crossing the road at the intersection. She is not in a marked crosswalk, but she is below a traffic light, which is green when she starts crossing, but has turned red by the time a vehicle speeds into frame, striking her.

The light-coloured sedan stops for a few seconds, but can later be seen driving out of frame. A second pedestrian on the sidewalk near where the car stopped appears to follow the vehicle as it moves away.

Mounties did not describe the incident as a hit-and-run crash, and CTV News has reached out to Richmond RCMP to clarify whether the driver remained at the scene.

“The driver of this vehicle has been identified, and speed and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors to the collision,” the release reads.

Police are now looking to speak to the second pedestrian or anyone else with information about the crash.

“This pedestrian may have key information about the collision,” said Cpl. Kenneth Lau, in the release.

“If you were in the area, investigators are looking to speak with you to learn more about the incident.”

Mounties are also reminding the public to “take extra precautions when crossing roads,” particularly at night and in adverse weather conditions.

“Always look both ways before crossing, wear reflective clothing if possible, and never assume a vehicle will stop for you before making eye contact with the driver,” police said.
