A man in his 70s was struck and killed by the driver of a vehicle in Nanaimo, B.C., on Thursday, police said. Nanaimo RCMP said the elderly man was standing next to his parked vehicle on Departure Bay Road near Argyle Street just before 5 p.m., when an SUV left the road and struck him. The man had serious life-threatening injuries, and emergency crews transported him to hospital for medical treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries. βThis is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a life and has deeply affected everyone involved,β said Insp. Donovan Tait, operations officer for the Nanaimo RCMP, in a statement. The driver of the SUV, another man in his 70s, remained at the scene and co-operated, according to police, who explained theyβre still investigating why the vehicle left the roadway. Police added that roads were dry and in good condition, and alcohol, drugs, and speed arenβt believed to be factors in the collision.
