Man arrested after stealing, crashing transit bus in Kamloops, B.C., RCMP say

A 55-year-old Vancouver man is in custody after allegedly stealing and crashing a transit bus in Kamloops last weekend.

The incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, Kamloops RCMP said in a news release Thursday.

Officers were called to the 500 block of Lansdowne Street in the city’s downtown for a report of a collision between the bus and a pickup truck, police said.

According to Mounties, the suspect had stolen the bus while the driver had “temporarily stepped away.”

Shortly thereafter, the bus collided with the truck, which had been travelling west on Lansdowne Street, police said. No one was injured in the crash.

Police identified the accused as Vancouver resident Steven Mehlenbacher, who they said remained in custody at the time of their release on Thursday.

Online court records indicate Mehlenbacher has been charged with motor vehicle theft, dangerous operation of a conveyance, uttering threats and theft under $5,000.

His next court appearance is scheduled for May 5 in Kamloops.
