Man arrested after shots fired, vehicles crashed in Burnaby, RCMP say

A 44-year-old man was taken into custody after a string of incidents in South Burnaby Friday night.

Burnaby RCMP told CTV News they received “a report of a disturbance on the street” near Inman Avenue and Prince Street just after 10:30 p.m.

When front-line officers responded, they found a white sedan they believed was related to the complaint. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled.

“For public safety, no pursuit was initiated,” police said.

A short time later, around 10:45 p.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired near Wilma Street and Salisbury Avenue, as well as reports of a three-vehicle collision at Edmonds Street and Griffiths Drive.

Police said they found evidence confirming shots were fired, but no victims were located.

Officers located a white sedan at the collision scene that “appeared to be the same vehicle” that had failed to stop earlier in the night, police said, adding that the driver of the vehicle was not located.

Just after 11:30 p.m., police learned that a man associated with the sedan “was on the roof of a residential complex near Wilma Street and Salisbury Avenue.”

“Because of the earlier shots fired, police set up containment in the area and the residents of the building were temporarily evacuated,” police said.

The heavily armed Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team responded to the scene, and the man was taken into custody without further incident shortly after 1:30 a.m., police said.

Mounties confirmed the suspect, a Coquitlam resident, remained in custody Saturday. They said there is no further risk to the public and the investigation is ongoing.
