Impaired B.C. dump truck driver facing 90-day driving ban, full truck impounded

A loaded dump truck will sit in an impound lot for 30 days after its allegedly impaired driver was caught by police in Chilliwack, B.C., and slapped with a three-month driving ban.

Police were called to Highway 1, eastbound near Vedder Road, just before 9:30 a.m. amid a report a dump truck was driving dangerously in the area, a statement from the BC Highway Patrol said Monday.

“The caller who alerted police did a great job describing the driving behaviour and location of the truck,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“We are obviously very concerned whenever a professional dump truck driver makes the decision to drive while impaired,” he said.

The truck was intercepted by two BC Highway Patrol vehicles near Popkum Road. Its driver, a 64-year-old man from Abbotsford, has been banned from driving for 90 days and had to be picked up and driven home by his wife, said police.

The Abbotsford company that owns the truck are responsible for covering the towing and impound costs.
