1 dead, 1 arrested after fight at Maple Ridge home, police say

A 49-year-old man is dead and another man is in custody after what police described as “an altercation” inside a home in Maple Ridge Monday night.

Around 7:30 p.m. front-line officers from Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a report of a “fight in progress” at a home in the 23700 block of 110 Avenue.

“When officers arrived on scene they located a male victim in medical distress,” the detachment said in a news release Tuesday.

“Despite life-saving efforts by officers and attending emergency health services, the male did not survive.”

In its own news release Tuesday, the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team described the deceased as a 49-year-old man, though they did not share his name or his relationship to the arrested man.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said they believe the fight was “an isolated incident involving parties known to each other.” Investigators do not believe there is any further risk to the public, the detachment said.

IHIT said its investigation is ongoing, but the incident “is not believed to be related to gang activity or extortion.”

The man arrested at the scene remains in custody and investigators are working to “determine his exact involvement in the victim’s death,” IHIT said.

“Due to the swift response by the Ridge Meadows RCMP frontline officers, the scene was quickly made safe and secured for further investigation,” said Sgt. Freda Fong, in the IHIT release.

“You can expect investigators in the area as witness interviews and CCTV review are ongoing.”
