Heavy snow forecast for B.C. Interior, with Coquihalla Highway expecting up to 60 cm

Heavy snow and strong winds have prompted warnings from Environment Canada for several parts of British Columbia.

The forecaster has issued a snow squall warning expected Thursday for both the North and South Peace Regions bringing intense snow combined with strong winds, making visibility near zero at times.

It says high winds are expected in the central and southern Interior where a strong, low-pressure system will bring gusts reaching up to 80 and 90 km/h into Thursday.

A long period of snow will fall on the northern Columbia and Kinbasket regions, where 30 to 50 cm is expected before it tapers Thursday night.

For drivers on the Coquihalla Highway and Trans-Canada through Eagle and Rogers Pass, they can expect treacherous conditions with heavy snow on the roads.

The Trans-Canada through the Rogers Pass will see up to 30 cm by Thursday night, but the snowfall won’t let up on the Coquihalla until Friday and the route could get between 40 and 60 cm of snow.
