The Sarnia Police Service shared more information Tuesday in the Monday evening arrest in London of the prime suspect in a fatal shooting at Lambton College in Sarnia earlier this month. Police say the arrest was made without incident, but not before turning a northwest London neighbourhood upside down. “Maybe three drones in the area, scanning around the area, and stuff like that,” explained one witness who didn’t want his name published. “Had the backstreet blocked off and stuff. There was a bulletproof SUV over here with like five guys, armed personnel. Masks, helmets, stuff like that. Huge guns.” The arrest happened Monday around 6:20 pm when the London Police Service Emergency Response Unit descended on 65 Ranchwood Cres. Neighbour Kathy watched it go down. “I heard them announcing the name and I seen the guy walk out of the place and finally surrender. I assumed, I said to my son, ‘I’ll bet you it’s the guy they’re looking for from the Sarnia shooting.’ And sure enough, it was,” she said. Speaking to reporters and members of victim Dane Nisbet’s family Tuesday, Sarnia police said homicide investigators learned Doe was believed to be in hiding at the London residence. That’s when the reached out to London police, said Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis. “The residence was contained, with Doe ultimately surrendering to the police presence that was there. He was placed under arrest and turned over to the Sarnia Police Service for transport back here,” said Davis. The case goes back more than two weeks to April 10, when Sarnia police responded to Lambton College just before 1 a.m. after reports of shots being fired outside a campus bar. Dane Nisbet, 20, died in hospital after being shot. Three of his friends suffered non-life threatening injuries. In the following days, three people were arrested in connection with the shooting. Also charged with second-degree murder is Odum Richard Bun, 23, who remains in custody, along with two Sarnia residents. Nineteen-year-old Johnathan Osborne-Walsh, and Ava-Leigh Lightheart, also 19, are each charged with various offences including accessory after the fact. “Everybody else who was present who are charged are people who weren’t directly involved in the shooting but did participate in the escape and the movement of the firearm afterwards,” explained Sarnia Deputy Police Chief Ron Hansen. Police also revealed the firearm investigators recovered from a Point Edward hotel safe is a Glock 45 handgun. It was found with a magazine inserted, which contained 30 rounds. The last transaction on record for the gun is from 2022 in Georgia, said Chief Davis. “This is an illegal firearm, smuggled into our country, that has been in circulation for the past four years,” said Davis. Doe had been wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. Police could not say whether a $50,000 Crimestoppers reward led to his arrest, explaining that it would compromise the anonymity of the Crimestoppers program. In the meantime, Doe made his first court appearance Tuesday Morning. He was remanded in custody at Sarnia Jail. His next court date is scheduled for May 1.
