Local cannabis grower pitches DIY pot kits A local grower wants to bring cannabis out of the basements and into the light by showing people how to crow their own pot.

There's a do-it-yourself kit for just about everything these days. You can already make your own beer or wine, and now a local cannabis cultivator wants to bring pot out of the basement and into the light, with its D.I.Y. guide to growing your own marijuana.

If Canada’s proposed new marijuana laws pass you’ll be able to legally grow up to four plants, and Tantalus Labs wants to teach you how to do just that.

“The homegrown market is massive in British Columbia" said Dan Sutton of Tantalus Labs, "There's a lot of very high appetite consumers out there for cannabis; medical and recreational."

Using natural sunlight, Tantalus Labs says it’s the first greenhouse of its kind in North America to grow cannabis. There are 500 plants thriving at its specialized facilities, with natural light and recycled water.

"[Growing cannabis] doesn't have to be limited to just large corporate enterprises," explained Sutton.

The company has now published an online do-it-yourself guide to help you create your own cannabis greenhouse. The guide shares knowledge and links about how to successfully grow your own healthy pot plants.

Why, you ask?

"We need to go back to the history of farming and move away from the stealth, indoor, highly inefficient bunker grow ops that have dominated cannabis cultivation today," said Sutton, “"[Our company] sharing this information with people is far more important to me socially than just sheltering our intellectual property and trying to protect our bottom line."

The proposed legislation is in the final stages of being approved so by this time next year many people may be harvesting their first crop at home.

But it’s not going to be a free-for-all.

You need to be 18 years old to grow plants, and it will be illegal to sell or distribute unless you’re licensed to do so. Possession of more than 30 grams of dried cannabis could get you a ticket or land you in jail and so could producing more than your four plant limit.
