Fraser Health issues warning after complaints about ‘illegal food service operations’

Fraser Health has issued an unusual public warning, reminding people to purchase food “exclusively from approved food service establishments” after a series of recent complaints.

The warning, which the health authority issued in English and six other languages Friday, indicates that public health officials have received complaints about “illegal food service operations.”

“These complaints include businesses operating from unapproved commercial kitchens and private dwellings such as single-family homes, garages, townhomes and apartments,” the warning reads.

“Illegal food services may include catering, tiffin services, take out/delivery of ready-to-eat foods and baked products.”

These businesses do not hold valid operating permits, Fraser Health said, adding that such permits are only granted after “a comprehensive application review and on-site inspection.”

“Consuming food from illegal food business increases your risk of food safety concerns and foodborne illnesses from improper food preparation, storage and handling of foods,” the warning reads.

“Foodborne illnesses such as E. coli and hepatitis may have greater impacts on vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, pregnant individuals and individuals with weakened immune systems.”

The health authority noted that inspection reports for all licensed food service establishments can be viewed online, as can all closure and correction orders.
