Drunk driver crashes into home in Abbotsford, B.C., police say

A woman who crashed her vehicle into a home in Abbotsford, B.C., was arrested for impaired driving Sunday morning, according to authorities.

Officers were called to the 3700 block of Nanaimo Crescent just before 12:30 a.m. for reports of a “serious collision involving a vehicle that crashed into a residence,” the Abbotsford Police Department said in a statement to social media.

The driver, a 23-year-old woman, was taken into custody at the scene, according to police.

“She was arrested for impaired driving and was found to be more than twice the legal limit. Fortunately, no one inside the home was injured,” the statement from police said, adding criminal charges will be recommended.

Since Jan. 1, the Abbotsford Police Department said it has taken 116 impaired drivers off the road.

According to data from ICBC, more than half of all impaired driving crashes in the province happen over the weekend, and more than one third happen between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

On average, 65 people die in impaired driving crashes every year in British Columbia, according to the insurer.
