One year after a crash at the Okanagan Granfondo that left one cyclist dead and two others injured, authorities have announced criminal charges against a driver. The collision happened last July on a rural road just outside Penticton, near St. Andrews by the Lake Golf Resort, during the 155-kilometre cycling event. In a news release, Penticton RCMP said officers arrested Jonathan Crant on Monday following an “extensive investigation” into the collision. Prosecutors have since approved one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm against the suspect. “This has been a complex investigation requiring significant investigative efforts to collect, analyze and assess evidence,” said Staff Sgt. Scott Hanry, in a statement. “Our community was profoundly impacted by this event. Our thoughts remain with all family members and those affected by this tragic incident.” The woman killed in the Okanagan Granfondo was identified as Ava Choy, who worked in administration for Vancouver Fire Rescue Services and also as a stunt performer. Friends were left with many questions about how the collision could have happened. Months after Choy’s death, organizers of the Okanagan Granfondo announced they were ending the annual ride after 14 years. They said the collision took a serious toll on staff and volunteers.
