Dangerous driver stopped with spike belt on Sea to Sky Hwy., police say

Authorities are asking witnesses to come forward weeks after an alarming incident on the Sea to Sky Highway that ended with police using a spike belt to apprehend an alleged speeder.

B.C. Highway Patrol said the incident started in West Vancouver, where a white 2005 Chrysler 300C was clocked going 194 km/h down Highway 1 on the night of Oct. 30.

An officer from the West Vancouver Police Department tried pulling the car over with lights and siren activated, but said the driver failed to stop—and instead continued northbound toward Squamish.

The officer did not give chase due to “the vehicle’s high speed and concerns for public safety,” but radioed ahead to other law enforcement agencies, BCHP said in a news release Tuesday.

Shortly after, the Chrysler was seen zooming through Porteau Cove, where the driver once again failed to stop for police, authorities said.

Only after deploying a spike belt on the Sea to Sky Highway just north of the community were police able to stop the car and arrest the driver, BCHP added.

Authorities have urged anyone who witnessed the incident—and particularly anyone with dash-cam video of the Chrysler—to come forward.

“This driver’s conduct displayed a blatant disregard for public safety,” said WVPD spokesperson Suzanne Birch in a statement. “West Vancouver police will continue to work in co-ordination with Squamish RCMP and the BC Highway Patrol to get these drivers off the road and hold them accountable.”

Police expect to recommend two Criminal Code counts of flight from police and one Motor Vehicle Act charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle against the driver, who was also issued an immediate 24-hour driving prohibition after being “tested for alcohol consumption,” BCHP said.

The driver has subsequently received a 10-month prohibition order from RoadsafetyBC.
